3M Thinsulate is excellent. Duck Liner solves a different problem.
Thinsulate provides lofted thermal and acoustic performance and remains one of our preferred van-insulation materials. But it is not a sealed surface layer, and it does not include a reflective foil facing. Air can move through gaps in an incomplete installation and reach cold sheet metal, where condensation can form. Duck Liner adheres directly to the prepared metal, covers irregular surfaces, and—when its seams are taped—helps create a more continuous first layer beneath Thinsulate.
We needed more than loft insulation alone.
Development began in 2020 as we worked through real camper-van insulation challenges. We started with 3M Thinsulate because it is flexible, hydrophobic and effective—but we wanted a continuous layer against the sheet metal that could address radiant heat, panel vibration and uncontrolled air contact at the metal surface.
Duck Liner became that first layer: self-adhered closed-cell neoprene with a reflective foil face. Thinsulate remains the second layer that adds the deeper thermal loft. The two materials are complementary, not substitutes.

Clean, dry metal provides the foundation. Remove contaminants and address corrosion before any insulation is installed.
Continuous first layer
Self-adhesive closed-cell neoprene follows ribs and curved panels. Reflective foil faces inward; taped seams help limit air paths to the cold metal.
Lofted thermal layer
Thinsulate fills cavities and adds the higher-value thermal and acoustic layer needed for a balanced van-insulation assembly.
Reduce the path to cold metal.
Condensation occurs when moisture-laden interior air reaches a surface cold enough for water to condense. No insulation product can remove the need for ventilation and humidity control. Duck Liner helps by creating a closed-cell layer directly against the metal and reducing open air paths when installed continuously with sealed seams.

A reflective face that Thinsulate does not have.
The aluminum-foil facing adds a reflective surface to the insulation assembly, helping manage radiant heat transfer. Its real-world contribution depends on the complete build—including adjacent layers, available air space, seam treatment and installation quality—so we present it as one part of the system rather than a stand-alone miracle layer.
In summer, the assembly helps slow exterior heat from moving inward. In winter, it supports a more stable interior envelope while Thinsulate supplies additional thermal resistance.

2020 · Development begins
We began looking for a first layer that could adhere to sheet metal, address radiant heat and panel vibration, and complement the 3M insulation we already trusted.
2021 · The complete-envelope problem
Van builds reinforced the same lesson: fibrous insulation performs well, but gaps and exposed metal can still allow interior air to reach cold surfaces. A continuous first layer became the priority.
Duck Liner · The complementary layer
Reflective foil, closed-cell neoprene and self-adhesive backing were combined into a material shaped around van construction—not residential walls.

The recommended assembly uses Duck Liner at the metal and Thinsulate over it, alongside sealed seams, ventilation and appropriate moisture management.

Does Duck Liner replace 3M Thinsulate?
No. Duck Liner is the adhered first layer against the metal; 3M Thinsulate adds the higher-value lofted thermal and acoustic layer. We recommend using them together for a more complete assembly.
Will Duck Liner completely eliminate condensation?
No single material can guarantee that. Duck Liner helps reduce air contact with cold metal when applied continuously with sealed seams, but ventilation, heating practices, indoor humidity and thermal bridges still affect condensation.
What are the roll dimensions?
Each published roll measures 32.5 feet long by 3.25 feet wide and uses 3/8-inch closed-cell neoprene with adhesive backing.
What temperature should it be installed at?
The product guidance recommends an ambient and van-metal temperature between 50 and 80°F. The surface should be clean, dry and free from oils, old adhesive and contamination.
How should the seams be finished?
Fit the pieces closely, apply even pressure with a roller, and tape the seams with suitable construction vapor-barrier tape to improve continuity. Follow the current product instructions for your build.
Does reflective foil work without an air gap?
Reflective performance depends on the complete assembly and adjacent air space. The foil still provides a durable facing and one component of the thermal system, but it should not be treated as a high-R-value replacement for Thinsulate.
