INTRODUCTION
If you've spent much time looking at professional camper van interiors, you've probably seen L-track even if you didn't know what it was called.
Those aluminum tracks running along the walls, ceiling or floor can become one of the most useful parts of a van conversion.
At Tec Vanlife, we've used L-track for bed systems, cabinetry, storage, cargo management and creating mounting points that allow a van interior to change over time.
But after working with L-track systems, there's one thing we think is more important than the track itself:
What you can't see behind the L-track matters just as much as what you can see.
A great-looking piece of aluminum track mounted to a decorative wall panel isn't much of a mounting system if there isn't appropriate reinforcement behind it.
That's why when we're planning L-track into a van from the beginning, we think about the track, back framing and mounting hardware as one system.
In this guide, we'll explain the approach we use, how much L-track we'd plan for different vans, and a few things we've learned from installing these systems in camper van conversions.

Why We Like L-Track in Camper Vans
One of the hardest things about designing a camper van is knowing how you'll use it several years from now.
Today you might need a bed and cabinets. Next year you might be carrying mountain bikes. In winter, the same garage might need to carry skis, snowboards and different storage boxes.
If everything has its own permanent mounting point, changing the interior can mean drilling more holes every time your setup changes.
L-track gives you a permanent mounting system with adjustable attachment points.
Compatible fittings can be moved along the track rather than requiring a new mounting hole every time something changes.
That's why we don't really think of L-track as simply a tie-down rail.
Properly planned, it becomes part of the architecture of the van.

Surface-Mount vs Flanged L-Track

This is usually one of the first decisions to make.
Neither option is universally better. It depends on when you're installing the track and the finish you're trying to achieve.
Surface-Mount L-Track
Surface-mount L-track installs over the finished surface.
This makes it particularly useful for existing conversions, retrofits and areas where you don't need the track integrated into the surrounding wall or floor.
Tec Vanlife offers both rounded surface-mount L-track and square surface-mount L-track profiles.
If we were adding L-track to a van that already had finished wall panels installed, surface-mount would be one of the first options we'd consider.
84-Inch Flanged L-Track

When we're designing the interior around the L-track from the beginning, we particularly like the 84-inch flanged profile.
The flange allows the surrounding wall or floor finish to integrate with the track, giving the installation a much cleaner appearance.
Instead of looking like a rail that was added after the van was built, the L-track becomes part of the interior design.
There's another important reason we use the 84-inch version:
It is designed to work with our 84-inch L-track back-framing system.

The anodized matte-black flanged L-track provides a clean, low-profile appearance, while the silver BEEFY flanged L-track uses a wider flange for a more substantial integrated finish.

Instead of looking like a rail that was added after the van was built, the L-track becomes part of the interior design.
There's another important reason we use the 84-inch versions:
They are designed to work with our 84-inch L-track back-framing system.

The Part of the L-Track System You Can't See
This is probably the most important part of this guide.
A finished plywood or upholstered wall panel can look substantial once it's installed. But the finished panel and the mounting structure have two different jobs.
The panel provides the finish.
The reinforcement provides the mounting structure.
That's why we developed our 84-inch L-track back framing.

The steel reinforcement is installed behind the finished interior panel and creates dedicated attachment points for the L-track.
The finished installation can be thought of as:
84-inch Flanged L-Track → Finished Wall Panel → 84-inch Steel Back Framing → Vehicle Structure
This is also why we recommend deciding where your L-track will go before you finish insulating and paneling the van whenever possible.
Why We Recommend 84-Inch L-Track With Our Back Framing
We sell different lengths and types of L-track, but there's an important distinction when you're using our back-framing system.
Our back framing is designed around 84-inch L-track.
The mounting locations in the track correspond with the mounting locations in the 84-inch back framing.
Our Preferred Reinforced L-Track Setup
Our Preferred Reinforced L-Track Setup
When we're planning a reinforced installation, we treat the following components as one system:
1. 84-Inch Flanged L-Track
Choose the anodized matte-black flanged L-track or the wider silver BEEFY flanged L-track.
This is the visible aluminum track and provides the adjustable mounting interface inside the van.
2. 84-Inch L-Track Back Framing
The 84-inch steel back framing installs behind the finished panel and provides matching reinforced mounting points for the track.
3. Tapered Flat-Head L-Track Mounting Screws
The tapered flat-head mounting screws secure the L-track through the finished panel and into the back-framing system.
For the sizing guide below, we allow one 12-pack of mounting screws per reinforced 84-inch section.
4. L-Track End Caps
Aluminum L-track end caps provide a clean finished appearance at the exposed ends of the installation.
Together, these components create a system where the visible track, mounting hardware and reinforcement behind the wall are planned together.
Note: Rivets for attaching the back framing to the vehicle structure are not included in the complete L-track packages.

How Much L-Track Do I Need for My Camper Van?
There isn't one universal quantity of L-track for every Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster because every interior layout is different.
But we can provide a useful starting point based on the way we typically plan an L-track system.
Our sizing guide assumes:
2 longitudinal ceiling runs
2 wall runs on the driver side — upper and lower
2 wall runs on the passenger side — upper and lower
There is one very important exception:
We do not install L-track across the sliding door.
The passenger-side calculations therefore account for the sliding-door opening rather than treating both sides of the van as identical.
The quantities below should be used as a planning guide. Windows, cabinetry, wall layouts and where you choose to start and finish each track can change the final quantity required.
Choose a complete camper van L-track system by vehicle, or shop individual L-track profiles, back framing, mounting hardware, end caps and fittings.

Planning Note: These quantities are intended as a starting point for the six-run layout described above. Final requirements depend on your windows, cabinetry, wall layout and where you choose to start and finish each track. Always measure your actual van before ordering.

Why Do Longer Vans Need So Much More L-Track?
It's not simply because the van itself is longer.
We're creating several longitudinal runs throughout the interior.
When one of those runs becomes longer than a single 84-inch section, another section is required.
That happens across multiple ceiling and wall runs, so moving into a longer van can increase the total number of 84-inch sections fairly quickly.
The sliding door also changes the calculation.
The driver's side can accommodate longer longitudinal runs, while the passenger-side wall is interrupted by the sliding-door opening.
That's why we calculate each mounting zone rather than simply multiplying the van's overall length by six.

Why Are There 12 End Caps for Every Van?
The end-cap quantity works differently from the track quantity.
Our standard layout contains six completed L-track runs:
2 ceiling runs
2 driver-side wall runs
2 passenger-side wall runs
With one finished end cap at each exposed end:
6 runs × 2 ends = 12 end caps
Longer vans require more 84-inch sections to create those runs, but they don't necessarily create more exposed ends.
If your design separates sections rather than creating continuous runs, you may need additional end caps.

When Should I Install L-Track Back Framing?
Earlier than most people think.
If you're doing a complete conversion, we'd determine the L-track locations during the layout stage.
Before the finished walls go in, think about what might eventually attach to the track:
Beds, cabinets, tables, storage, bikes, cargo equipment or accessories you haven't even bought yet.
Once you've decided on the locations, the back framing can be installed behind the finished panels.
Trying to add reinforcement after insulation, wiring, cabinetry and wall panels are installed is considerably harder.
Our advice is simple:
If you think you might want reinforced L-track later, plan the back framing now. We always install back framing to secure our flanged L-track.
You don't have to use every attachment point immediately.

Where Should L-Track Go in a Camper Van?
Ceiling
Two longitudinal ceiling runs can provide useful mounting locations throughout the van and are part of the layout we've used for our sizing chart and complete packages.
Driver-Side Wall
Without a sliding-door interruption, this side provides an opportunity for continuous upper and lower L-track runs.
Passenger-Side Wall
The passenger side requires more planning because of the sliding door.
We do not install L-track across the sliding door.
Instead, plan the upper and lower runs around the usable fixed wall sections.
Bed and Garage Area
This is one of our favorite applications.
L-track can provide adjustable mounting points around a modular bed or rear garage without permanently dedicating every attachment point to one configuration.
A van used for mountain bikes in summer and skiing in winter doesn't necessarily need the same cargo layout year-round.
That's exactly where L-track starts to make sense.

One L-Track Mistake We'd Avoid
If there's one thing we'd tell someone planning L-track for the first time, it's this:
Don't treat the finished wall panel as the mounting structure.
A beautiful plywood panel doesn't necessarily provide the structural support needed for whatever you're attaching to the track.
Think about what's behind it.
That's why our approach separates the two jobs:
Interior panel = finish
Back framing = reinforcement
Planning those two elements separately makes for a much better finished installation.

L-Track Frequently Asked Questions
What is L-track used for in a camper van?
L-track provides adjustable attachment points for compatible fittings and accessories. In camper vans it can form part of mounting systems for beds, cabinetry, storage, cargo restraints, bikes and removable accessories.
Is L-track the same as airline track?
The terms L-track and airline track are commonly used for similar track-based mounting and cargo-restraint systems. Always confirm the dimensions and fitting compatibility of the particular track you're purchasing.
Should I use surface-mount or flanged L-track?
Surface-mount L-track is particularly useful for retrofits and straightforward installations because it installs over the finished surface. Flanged L-track can be integrated into the surrounding finish and is our preference when designing a reinforced system into a new build.
What is the difference between the black and silver complete packages?
The silver packages contain Tec Vanlife's wider BEEFY flanged/recessed L-track with a natural silver anodized finish. The black packages contain anodized matte-black flanged/recessed L-track with a slimmer, low-profile appearance.
Both package styles include matched 84-inch back framing, mounting screws and aluminum end caps.
Do I need back framing behind L-track?
It depends on the installation and intended load. For our reinforced wall and ceiling system, we use dedicated back framing behind the finished panel rather than relying on decorative paneling alone.
Are rivets for the back framing included?
No. Rivets used to attach the steel back framing to the vehicle structure are not included in the complete L-track packages.
Which L-track works with Tec Vanlife back framing?
Tec Vanlife's back-framing system is designed to align with compatible 84-inch L-track.
Can I use 100-inch L-track with Tec Vanlife back framing?
We don't recommend it. The mounting locations of our 100-inch L-track do not align correctly with the Tec Vanlife 84-inch back-framing system.
The 100-inch track can still be useful for other installations; it simply isn't the correct component for this particular reinforced system.
How many pieces of L-track do I need for a Sprinter 144?
For the six-run layout described in this guide, we estimate approximately 10 sections of 84-inch L-track, together with 10 matching back-framing sections and 10 screw packs.
Choose the Sprinter 144 silver package or Sprinter 144 black package.

Ideally, plan and install the reinforcement before insulation and finished wall panels are completed. This allows the mounting system to be integrated into the build rather than retrofitted later.
Can L-track be installed after my walls are finished?
Yes, depending on the installation, but adding reinforcement behind an already finished wall may require removing or modifying panels. Planning it during the initial conversion is considerably easier.
For an existing finished conversion, surface-mount L-track may be the more practical option.
How strong is camper van L-track?
There isn't one meaningful load rating for every L-track installation. Capacity depends on the track, mounting hardware, backing structure, vehicle attachment, fastener spacing, installation quality and direction of loading.
Safety-critical or load-bearing applications should be designed and evaluated appropriately.

Build the System, Not Just the Track
The biggest thing we've learned from working with L-track is simple:
Don't choose the visible track first and figure out what's holding it later.
Start with what you want the mounting system to do.
Work out where the track needs to run.
Plan the reinforcement before the walls go up.
Then choose track and hardware designed to work together.
For our reinforced system, that's:
84-inch Flanged L-Track + 84-inch Back Framing + Tapered Mounting Screws + End Caps
It takes a little more planning at the beginning of a van build.
But that's a lot easier than opening up a finished wall because you realized afterward that there isn't anything substantial behind your L-track.
